I'll never forget the scene with Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting...

"It's not your fault.... it's not your fault.... it's not your fault..."

It spoke to me a little too deeply. I feel shaky and tearful now. I don't think I could watch it again.

Such a sad loss, the man was a comic genius.

'One Hour Photo' showed another side to his talents, wish he'd made more films like this.

When my daughter was likkle, she was obsessed with Mrs Doubtfire and we watched it goodness knows how many times.

This scene always has me in stitches.

      RIP

And we both know why it speaks to us, Ams - those hidden reservoirs of pain....

Whilst one naturally extends the utmost sympathy to Mr Williams' loved ones ... suicide must be the most desperately painful loss suffered by any family ... am I the only member to be somewhat bewildered by the completely over-the-top and hyperbolic reaction to his sad death?

Both the BBC and SKY had the news ahead of the continuing massacres in various parts of the Middle East which does seem rather odd in the great scheme of things, but is probably simply further evidence of the 'celebrity culture' which so afflicts modern society.

I have to confess that I didn't find Mr Williams' brand of American humour in the least funny, (he was not exactly unique in that), and I certainly was surprised that so many appeared to be fooled into thinking that much of it was 'spontaneous'.

Fellow comic actor Alexei Sayle is quoted as saying ... 'It was only through watching him that I saw that what seemed spontaneous was in fact the result of a huge amount of work.'

Of course it was, as any true professional will know, though the fact that Mr Williams also had a quite extraordinary memory able to store such a huge amount of material to deliver at random is undeniable.

I think that's typical media reaction, like a dog not letting go of a bone.

A sad event, certainly, but after knowing him as Mork (which I didn't find particularly funny) I was not aware of anything he had done since.

I see that Robin Williams's daughter had felt the need to withdraw from from a couple of social media sites due to mean-spirited comments aimed at her recently deceased father. Sadly It seems that mean-spiritedness is not confined to such platforms.

For those that could, BBC1 have just started showing it...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I was a bit late to the table and only started the recorder about 15 minutes in. Hope the rest makes sense without those lost minutes.

Earlier I watched the DVD of The Fisher King, which I had bought some considerable time ago but until now had not until now got round to watching. The comments by Terry Gilliam here illustrate just what sort of person and actor we have lost in Robin Williams.

As there seems to have been a bit of a dispute in my absence - could I make a suggestion that when someone feels they wish to start a tribute thread to someone who has recently died, contributors might generally follow the axiom 'De mortuis nil nisi bonum' and not contribute on that particular thread if they feel in any way unsympathetic, either to what has been said or towards the subject of the tribute? I suspect that in most cases people would not start such tributes if they welcomed all views on all possible aspects ...

                            The posts removed are here.

This is a tribute thread; other 'matters arising' (including the removal of recent posts to a new thread), such as for instance the media's over the top treatment of such news items would be more appropriate for discussion on a different thread.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I thought this was extraordinary, from Russell Brand...

Russell Brand: The manic energy of Williams could turn to destruction as easily as creativity. Is it melancholy to think that a world that he can’t live in must be broken?

Yes jayne. Thank you for directing to it. Many thought-provoking things there e.g.

"like tinfoil on an old school filling" - there's something I've felt but never seen expressed...

"he was in the wrong context or element, a fallen bird on a hard floor" - perfect, touching.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
