A visitor commented on the small size of Dorothy Parker's new apartment to which Parker replied

"Oh all I need is a place to lay my hat and a few friends!"

"Litaniae Lauretanae, or Litany of Loretto, is a thirteenth century litany in honour of the Virgin Mary. It is sung every evening at Loretto and is much sung in Italy generally. It is frequently used at Benediction after the 'O Salutaris'. Palestrina composed many settings of it and modern composers too many."

Percy Scholes, "The Oxford Companion to Music" 9th edition.

If all the students who fell asleep in my lessons were laid end to end on the floor

they'd be a lot more comfortable.

                  From Maurice Bowra's 'Memories':

Oxford don on visit to college farm and observing a bull impregnating a cow: Omne animal post coitum triste.
Fellow Oxford don: Yes, there is in London a firm of solicitors called Mann, Rodgers and Greaves.

Way behind a deadline with some copy, Dorothy Parker retreated to the ladies, where she could hide behind the locked door. Aware of this, the editor dispatched an underling to shout under the door that the editor was waiting. At this intrusion Parker bellowed back at the underling "Tell him I've been too fucking busy ... and vice versa!"

I wonder why she thought that the girls at Yale were 'most likely to'? What did she have against the girls at other universities?
