.. A Royal Visit and Donation

the Middle Kingdom is to be visited this noontide by those modern usurpers of the authority and providence of the ancient peoples of these islands; the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall .... She will present a horseshoe to add to the Kingdom's Great Collection of Spurious Horseshoes [much beloved by the tourist board &c]

the local Tesco has painted it's bollards:

no purple vests on show so far .... but rather skimpy bunting and many Special Branch Persons are noticeable ... the place has had a bit of a clean and tidy in honour of the visit ... i wonder if the Duchess still has the Sarah Lund pullover? [perhaps too warm today]

what music should one play loudly through one's open windows as the gentlepersons progress?
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Calum, only just seen this so too late to be of use, but how about a rousing rendition of Hey Johnnie Cope, although its significance would be entirely lost on the current generation of graeco-german hanoverians....

Maybe Pianorak, but that's just a bit of paper, imo.

Never mind usurped - the legitimate Stuart king was deposed & that bloke from Holland installed in his place.

At least his wife was a Stuart. The Hanoverians' claim to the throne was tenuous, and Victoria's (and hence that of her descendents) non-existent.

Beginning tonight on BBC2 - Dr Clare Jackson's series on the Stuarts. Our friends in Scotland have already had a chance to see it.

According to the write-up in the Guardian the series starts with James VI, so misses out rather a lot of them, including Mary, who would have provided a touch of glamour & intrigue
