Worth specifying that he was co-principal trumpet... and yes, tragic indeed.

Unimaginably tough for family and friends (inc. colleagues on Thursday evening in the RAH)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Yes, the LSO always seemed a family of an orchestra when I belonged to the LSO Club.

Depending ofcourse, if od was going to lead them this Thursday. It could have Phillip Cobb.

My favourite orchestra, for a long time now, as their anniversary is on my birthday! :)

Incredibly sad news. Rod was, as co-principal trumpet of the LSO, under the shadow of Maurice Murphy for a long time and struggled, if I remember correctly, with some considerable hearing loss so he had a tough time of it and no little courage in continuing with his musical career. There was an article in the Saturday Times magazine about this several years ago and it might be possible to find it with a bit of diligent searching.

RIP Rod Franks and condolences to family and LSO colleagues.

That's very sad news. I remember watching him on the LSO's YouTube Orchestra master classes. A real loss.

LSO trumpeter Rod Franks has died in a car crash.

The London Symphony Orchestra has announced the death of its trumpeter Rod Franks following a car accident in Nottinghamshire. Franks had been attending the Open Golf Championship with a friend who was also involved in the accident but survived.

The link contains a very interesting and informative mini-masterclass by Rod of the trumpet part in Mahler symphony no. 6

There was an earlier thread - will merge.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Truly shocking news. Rod was a student at Huddersfield just before me and I heard some memorable concerts with him before he buzzed off to Scandinavia. He came back only a year or two back to give some wonderful masterclasses and the students loved him. This is doubly shocking as he seemed to be over the worst of his terrible health problems. The irony....RIP Rod.
