Second morning and I have a slight feeling of unease as I always do when people like Michael Vaughan start getting 'cocky' about England's chances.

I wonder how Chris Jordan feels about being chosen as night watchman

Let's hope the rain holds off anyway

not so good now he is caught!

let us wish Root all the best for a ton or two!

think we will be unlucky with the rain ...

Poor bloke, apparently he nailed a surprise bouncer from Kumar but straight to mid-wicket's hands. Still it's all good experience I guess.

Yes Calum, a Bell/Root multi-hundred partnership would be great.

Bell's out too, so it's Moeen and Root to do the heavy lifting required.

What say you to England all out at around the 200 mark, Calum? They'll have to put Sir Geoffrey on with Alison Mitchell to keep his comments this side of decent, tha' knows

would not be surprised at 200 Ams; They could put Sir Geoffrey to grass or to sleep mebbe? the zone of inconsistent dogmatism would then recede

Personally I think the truculent Yorkshireman is one of the few perceptive commentators on TMS, far better than Michael Vaughan or Agnew. His comments on selection, scheduling, pitches, umpiring failings, DRS, batting technique etc are generally insightful and unlike the others he never holds back. He's best in tandem with the excellent Indian commentator Prakash Wakankar, imo.

The Indians' selection was flawed for this match. Jadeja is not good enough as batsman or bowler, Dhawan was getting better as an opener and has the potential to counter-attack unlike Gambhir and Sharma despite his poor shot selection at Southampton could have strengthened the weak middle order.

I agree aeolium, Sir Geoffrey is indeed a National Treasure, blunt, honest, well-informed but eeeee he do go on sometimes One of my favourites, alongside Ed Smith at the moment. I've not taken to Simon Mann I'm afraid. I enjoy Agnew/Boycott and Agnew/Swann but Tufnell with that new bloke we had last Test Match was an appalling combination, far too much in-talk and giggling Alistair Hignell seems to be entering a golden age

i do like Sir G but he does not hesitate to contradict himself with a blithe unawareness .... i love the way that Agnew treats him as a somewhat odd schoolboy ....

As Sir Geoffrey lived only 3 miles from where I went to boarding school, I am reminded of the locality every time he sees a great hit; he simple says "shot", something we said at school when someone had done something particularly well. But apart from in GB's commentaries, I've never heard it anywhere else since those days of youth.

Lunch now, England have reached 201-6, making 88-3 in the morning session, which puts the game into perspective.

It could still go either way.

In a post on another thread, someone has written that: " "it always rains in Manchester" is an exaggeration, a grotesque and untrue stereotype" or somesuch wittering.

Go tell that to The Marines!
