    Flower time

Wandering round our small patch I noticed roses and lilies in close proximity and the Schubert song, Die Rose, die Lilie came to my mind.

    Plenty of flowers in music:
    Nachtviolen
    Mit Myrthen Und Rosen
    Du bist wie eine Blume
    Die Lotosblume

    Here's something rather lovely

...not to mention going to San Francisco with Scott McKenzie...

    Any more musical flower favourites?

    Das Veilchen?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Isn't Die Rose, die Lilie by Schumann - from the Dichterliebe - or is there also a Schubert version also?

And what about Wagner's Art Work of the Fuchsia?

The flower songs that come to my mind are the ones Gurnemanz mentions, though I agree Die Rose, die Lilie is by Schumann, not Schubert.

Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal, settings by Quilter and Britten and probably others.

Go Lovely Rose - can't remember the composer. Quilter again? Warlock? (I wonder if the rose is the most frequently mentioned flower in songs?)

Five Flower Songs, Britten again! Also There is no Rose from Ceremony of Carols.

Then there are songs like Schubert's Trockne Blumen, which appear to be about flowers but are really about something else. That applies to many of the songs.

          Heidenröslein, Schubert again.

The Last Rose of Summer - another rose.

The Lily of Killarney -another lily.

How about a Sunflower? It's hidden in here:

An English Rose (Merrie England) - once a great favourite in recitals by Richard Tauber.

Der Rosenkavalier would have come up in Classical Music Association thread.

Beyond roses and lilies, and odd lilacs in French songs (I only know one), there seems to be surprisingly few music about named flowers. Remembering the CMA thread, composers are much more attuned to or have affinity with metrological and geographical phenomena or, maybe naturally, for birds but botany and horticulture don’t seem to be their thing.

Although wasn’t Telemann a keen plant collector?

Amaryllis was a nymph before she was a flower - she's probably still without roots in Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis by Wilbye (as cited by Mary) and definitely in Byrd's Though Amaryllis Dance in Green.
