Richard Tarleton
Two extracts from two different articles in "Gramophone":-
Oh – and should our current Minister for the Arts (whoever he or she happens to be this month) be reading this perchance, why isn’t Mr Bream Sir Julian? Perhaps like Vaughan Williams and JB Priestley he has been offered a knighthood and declined for his own good reason. If not, please forward his name to the Honours Committee without delay. The greatest and most influential classical guitarist of our age deserves no less.He breaks off when the phone rings. 'Doctor’s appointment,' he explains on his return. 'I’ve been with this place for a year now, but they keep calling me Sir Julian. It’s all rather embarrassing because I can’t find the way to tell them it’s just Mr Bream.' But then this is one of the greatest British musicians of the 20th century. Perhaps those who compile the honours lists should take the hint.
