Likewise. And I must apologise for lowering the tone of the thread right at the start, , happily rescued by others.

This morning the dog and I walked down to the Bargate to watch Morris dancing. There was a very energetic jig performed by a single dancer and excellent fiddler..but I missed the singing, apparently children are no longer allowed on top of the tower.

Anyone in Oxford for the festivities this year?

...and exactly how many have fallen off in the past?

Coincidentally, to celebrate Mayday, I was just listening to Dichterliebe - not Wunderlich but Holzmair with Imogen Cooper. I hadn't noticed the elongated Monat (and now in future always will!) in the Wunderlich recording which I've just played to remind me. A lovely recording but he would probably have done an even better one if he had lived to do so.

                  Happy Belthane Day!

I'm not too far from The South Downs and Morris men traditionally dance at dawn, which they still do.

It's a good excuse for hearing Bax's Spring Fire today as well!

Quite a nice piece, if not one of Bax's Best, ( that sounds like a 1920s ad poster for biscuits!) - but not a patch on Bridge's "Enter Spring" for sheer joie de vivre (see link below), especially the Britten version, which paces it just right: it has to move. Perhaps the composer had some reason to feel cheerful on that day - apparently he was given to moroseness.

Then there's E.J. Moeran's Songs of Springtime. This was very popular with amateur choirs at one time, but seems to have fallen by the wayside. Shame. Good pieces.

By chance, I am singing the Moeran this Summer when we go to France for a reunion with our old conductor from the 1960s, John Poole.

                        His choice, I understand.

Bax 'Spring Fire' is a most underrated work. I've mentioned here before that Sir Mark Elder considers it a masterwork. I certainly agree Bridge 'Enter Spring' is a very fine work too as is much of his work.

This thread has inspired me to make a point of playing some Bax works in the next few days.

And the Knots of May: https://www.knotsofmay.org.uk/

I also like Bax's Spring Fire although I struggle a bit with his symphonies!

It might be time for my annual wheeling out of Eine's mate and the request that this is placed in full on CD.

In the right hands, it could become a Proms standard.

And I reckon I have posted it at least half a dozen times:
