Here's more about the two versions of the painting:

The ceremony has been recorded at least once - I've got an old 45 on which not much can be heard except traffic noise.

              Song on May Morning

"Now the bright morning Star, Dayes harbinger,
Comes dancing from the East, and leads with her
The Flowry May, who from her green lap throws
The yellow Cowslip, and the pale Primrose.
Hail bounteous May that dost inspire
Mirth and youth, and warm desire,
Woods and Groves, are of thy dressing,
Hill and Dale, doth boast thy blessing.
Thus we salute thee with our early Song,
And welcom thee, and wish thee long"

Not in this case, though I must say kissing a frog felt a bit odd!

I can't see any of the www. stuff 'cos my broadband's only firing on half a cylinder, but is this general Mayday stuff to do with the good old English maypole and related natural (-ist?) frolics, or Red Shirts and clenched fists?
