But homosexuality will have been present in African societies long before White missionaries arrived with their homophobic notions. Many current African leaders are trying to suggest that homosexuality is a White import too.

Bernadine Evaristo begs to differ ...

I'm not allowed to express my opinion on this subject in this so called free country.

                I think you just have

The key bit is this IMV

But much more remarkable is that up and down our land there are straight married couples for whom their contract has not been in the least bit altered or debased. Quite simply, nothing has changed with the introduction of this revision of the marriage act. Such couples are no less married than they were and the family model has by no means disintegrated.

In what sense are you not allowed to express your opinion (which is, presumably, to disagree with the legislation)? There's no legislation to say that you can't; I don't think anyone's been imprisoned, or fined for doing so. The fact is that the legislation has been passed, some people are better of emotionally, mentally and legally, and nobody is any the worse for it.

Actually I think my previous post was inapropriate (but I'm not going to delete it, because I don't think it's wrong) because I believe that shb's op was more to celebrate & mark the occasion than to start a discussion of the merits of the legislation (which has been discussed already).

Freedom is a bit of an illusion really—you can have laws as liberal and egalitarian as you want, but society will always have its taboos, and if you break them there will be negative consequences, though they don't come from any official source. It's not against the law to cheat on your wife for instance, but try doing it and see how much support you get.

Still, it was a strange thing for James to write. A bit of a wolf cry, imo.
