RAI Radio FD 5 Auditorium (Italy)

My interest in classical music started in 1966 when at the age of 20 I moved to Milan (Italy) for four years. There I discovered the wire broadcast which still exists today in Italy where it is broadcast also in DAB+.
Rai Radio FD 5 is a radio channel, owned and produced by the Italian State broadcaster RAI, which broadcasts uninterrupted classical music without commercials.

Its 5th channel - RAI Radio FD 5 Auditorium - can be heard via internet ( http://www.radiofd5.rai.it/dl/portal...html?refresh_c ) (96 kbps) and via satellite Hotbird 13° East (11804v 27500 DVB-S / 192 kbit/s). Schedules can be found on the mentioned internet page by clicking on "palinsesto" and then on the date. A weekly newsletter is also offered which contains a link to the coming weekly programs.

A short history of the Italian wire broadcast can be found here (only in Italian): http://www.radiofd5.rai.it/dl/portal...db0654ea9.html

Is the "uninterrupted classical music" simply 'announced' or does the listener have to endure ghastly 'presenters' such as we have to endure here in the UK?

Looks a bit like a sort of classical juke box - see the schedule for today at http://www.rai.it/dl/docs/1434101335055FD5_20150616.pdf

Currently has Ravel Daphnis and Chloe.

From the home page find channel 5 as the rightmost "button" at the top of the page, otherwise you may end up with Rome or Milan traffic news under the text "Ascolta la diretta di"

I'm not sure that I can wait long enough to check what happens at the end of Daphnis, leading into a piano sonata by Richard Strauss.

All music pieces are announced before and after they are played without comments.

This station has been mentioned here and here on this board. I listen to it most days, using a satellite receiver played through my amp. They play a wide range of music from various sources: CDs, recordings from other broadcasters and their own recordings, many made at the Cappella Paolina of the Quirinale Palace in Rome. No guff or waffle, just an announcement of what is being played.

How does the sound quality rate? I wondered if the internet stream I listened to was compressed, either digitally or dynamically. However it might have been a reasonably accurate representation of a now relatively old recording.

                Welcome to the board, Dario.

Some time ago I encountered RAI when they were showing a pdf of the complete libretto to Peter Grimes. Unfortunately this does not appear to be available any more. Fortunately for me I kept a copy!

Does that radio station support any orchestras? Or is it just playing copies of old CDs?
                Pacta sunt servanda !!!

The short announcements are very pleasing on the ear, anyway, imo.

My "Stream Magic 6 Network Player" indicates as audio bit rate 96 kbps M3. From the Hotbird satellite (13° East; 11804 v 27500) 192 kbit/s are indicated. Here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_rate I found the following explanations:
96 kbit/s: generally used for speech or low-quality streaming.
                    192 kbit/s: a commonly used high-quality bitrate.
320 kbit/s: highest level supported by the MP3 standard.
This probably means that the audio quality via satellite is better.

Re complete libretto Peter Grimes: Perhaps you will find what you believed no more available here:
                      http://www.rai.it/dl/docs/1373297066055peter-grimes.pdf.
I also found another article: http://www.teatroregio.torino.it/node/2119.
I do not know whether Radio Rai FD5 does support orchestras. However some times very old recordings are played indeed. In these cases the recording dates are usually announced.
You can also find recording details in the published schedules. For the weekly schedules starting coming Sunday 21 June 2015 go to: http://www.rai.it/dl/docs/14328926947532015_06_21.pdf
and check for example the listings of the mentioned day at 10.00 am (one hour less in the UK) under the heading "Archivio Rai" (= Rai archives). You will notice that recording places and dates are indicated.
To get each week the schedules a newsletter in Italian can be subscribed here: http://www.rai.it/dl/portali/site/ar...3e0bdbf29.html.
("nome" = first name; "Cognome" = surname; "Città" = town/place. Click "Accetto privacy" (= accept privacy). The newsletter arrives on Wednesday only in Italian. At the end of the
newsletter you find in blue ink the indication "SCARICA IL PALINSESTO" (= download the schedules). Click on it. The result is what I indicated on the fifth line above.
