    Ingrid Laubrock Jon3 7.iii.11

    'Thou hast said it.'

Also Ingrid is right up there with Jane Ira Bloom for (Dr. Adolpho) Sax-appeal.

I was at this gig, and bought the record. It's not often these days that I'm left baffled unless it's something by her fellow countryman Helmut Lachenmann - but he's in the classical avant-garde. Somewhere along the Ms laubrock's road I seem to have lost the plot somehow. From what I could tell, the gig was much the same as the CD, but with the new stuff she's doing it's hard to say what's improvised and what pre-composed... and she did say that one of the numbers played was not on the CD.

A year ago I was singing Ingrid's praises. This is complex stuff, Ms Laubrock it appears has had to move to NY to find musicians with the vision to fully realise here newest ideas; and I've too much respect for Ms laubrock, not to say gratitude that at least there's still someone out there pushing the known out into the unknown to jump to too speedy a conclusion. I guess I'm just gonna have to give the CD a few more listens.

yes S_A hard to tell what is and isn't on this and similar clips

i confess to a total inability to stay in the same room as this kind of music making for much more than 60"

That complex passage on the link did resolve onto a definite theme; Ingrid then took a short solo, and as the camera zooms close can be seen checking her score, so I guess it helps to be where it's taking place - and not just with eyes closed, as is usually the case with me!

Listening just now to Kevin Le Gendre interviewing her, Ingrid makes the point that the British jazz scene is still very much divided between improv and straight-ahead, compared with New York's. I must say, Mr Le Gendre is very much on the button these days with his interviewing.

I was shocked by the Ingrid Laubrock clip - when I saw her play in a duo with Liam Noble the music was imspired and intelligent. I have to agree with your observation as this is precisely the kind of jazz / improvised music that drives me up the wall. It all seems totally pointless and a bit anal in my opinion. Interesting to see the guitarist Mary Haelverson in the group. Practically everything I have seem this guitarist play on has been wretched. It is as if her fingers are all caught up in the strings of her instrument and nothing I have heard her play seems to justify the purple prose devoted to her work. Usually I welcome the contribution of women jazz musicians who have generally offered some truly inspired directions for the music to go in whether we are talking about Geri Allen, MLW, Maria Schneider, Betty Carter or Carla Bley. All essential components of my record collection. Listening to Haelverson play, you are reminded just how dood someone like John Scofield is.

Curious to read the comment about differing attitudes in Europe and the States to jazz and improv. For me, improv is like someone practising and is unpolished. It can offer fascinating results but the success ratio to my way of hearing things is pretty minimal . I think that jazz has more baggage and could be deemed to be more limited in what is permissable but the ingredients that are an essential component are likes the herbs and spices which make cooking interesting. Improv can be a bit like a diet of couscous in many instances. The best "free" playing for me has been my musicians / in contexts with a strong jazz element. Probably why the European stuff can frequently be so off-putting whereas the likes of Paul Bley, Lee Konitz etc seem totally inspired when playing in a freer context. Didn't sound like the American group added to Laubrook's stature even though I like Tom Raney's drumming in many instruments and have found his to be receptive and personable when I have asked him questions about playing during the workshops / Q&A sessions he has run over here with Tim Berne. Amusing to hear this band and then reflect on the fact that he is a Louis Armstrong fan. I thought TB was a bit evasive though in a typically NYC way!!

Just listened on iPlayer. I loved it, particularly the guitarist. The discussion on music in NY seemed quite pointless.

Not sure who was in the discussion, but anyone who follows the excellent Jason Crane "Jazz Session" podcast will realise that the US jazz scene is far more diverse than late night (very late) listening to live broadcasts from Smalls or reading the on-line jazz mags & blogs would have you think think.
