... ... minds change with the tides of the moon

H&N gives us jazzbos a helping of Noszferatu and the Alexander von Schlippenbach Trio tonight, Saturday 25th January at 10 pm

meanwhile Jon3 gives us the Alex von Schlippenbach's trio performing at the Purcell Room during the 2013 London Jazz Festival.

To listen to the Schlippenbach Trio is to sit in on a musical conversation that's been going for over 40 years between three godfathers of European free improvisation: pianist Alex von Schlippenbach, saxophonist Evan Parker and drummer Paul Lovens. Their vocabulary is drawn from the full swathe of jazz and free music history, but the overall sound also reflects three performers whose individual style and personality is as strong as ever.

Also on the programme, we celebrate pioneering guitarist Marc Ribot's 60th birthday year. Alongside a performance from the Jazz on 3 archives with Evan Parker and Han Bennink, Ribot talks to fellow guitarist and Ribot fan Chris Sharkey. Their wide-ranging conversation covers great accidental guitar solos, learning to play the wrong way round and the studio secrets of Tom Waits, ending up with a bit of a jam.
er right hand left hand or the 31 bus; none and then the deluge?

is this old euro 'free improv' school just getting a bit stuck in a rut and dated or is it fresh and invigorating still .... does it seem relevant in the twenty tens rather than the 1960/70s?

Alyn has no playlist this morning

Claire Martin presents concert music recorded on the Jazz Line-Up stage at the 2013 London Jazz Festival featuring the Dainius Pulauskas Group from Lithuania, and talks to Larry Pryce about the Bull's Head in Barnes, as it's given a new lease of life after its recent renovation.
ah the Bulls Head on one corner of the school's xcountry route, out over Hammersmith back over Barnes Bridges... a killer if you ran it but several rather nice and accommodation public houses for VIth formers

Geoffrey has no playlist but features that thumper of the skins Gene Krupa

not much for me this weekend ...
    still there is always U

As this is the third week that Calum has noted no playlists ahead of JRR and Geoffrey Smith's Jazz, I'd just note that playlists for these two programmes are now produced by a system that adds tracks as they are actually being played on air.

It can't by definition be dated as it's the sound of surprise.

What's happened is that along with the rest of what was best it's been banished from respectability ever since capitalist globalisation replaced socialist internationalism.

A trend to be violently reversed when the Socialist Duck Party gains power and nationalises the top forty monopoly record shops.

You forgot to mention empiricism replacing the Rutland Five Year Plan in the advance programming of Jazz Record Requests!

that is not much use is it ..... what was wrong with putting them up in advance as has been the practice since before i can remember

the facts, sir, just the facts [and in advance]

Rutland would be embarassed by comparisons with Rurutania when it comes to five year plans

What's the point of that? We've all got ears, we generally know what's being played. I listen to JRR live and I like to have a look at the playlists first, see what's planned. I suppose it's another cost cutting exercise .....? Or a ploy to get listeners to stay tuned in as they won't know what's coming and fear they may miss a goodie if they turn off?
