Curious. What would be an "objective" view of music? Would you measure it on a Musicometer?

Maybe you just don't like jazz.

Now you're getting close to the heart of the matter. Ian, in particular, is presenting subjective views about music (good boy) as if they are objective views (bad boy). This is what MrGG has been trying to get y'all to understand (good boy).

          BN

"I like this music" = objective view

"This music is wrong/miscalculated/bad" = subjective view

          Not to be confused.

Since when has "I like" been an objective view! "I will invade Iraq becuase I just KNOW its right."

My, you really have bought "the programme."

You are confusing ethics/morality with epistomology

Seriously, a pianoforte is an elementary Musicometer. And two or more notes played in sequence or unison is music - to my ear at any rate.

I'm finding this thread very distracting - I should be doing something else!

That's fine. Each to his own.

Few people know that Mary Hopkins was the daughter of Lightnin' Hopkins. Jazz came up the River Wye to Brecon and a new art form was born. Hence the Brecon Jazz Festival where Caerphilly Joe Jones and Count Shirley played.

reading the excellent It's About That Time by Richard Cook i infer that Miles was seeking to rebuild his audience among african americans and took whatever measures in music making that he thought might work and hence Bitches Brew, Fillmore et seq .... and so it did he achieved 100,000 sales rather than the par 40,000 ..... Mingus was also surprised by how popular putting electric guitarists in the band made his albums ...

incidentally according to Cook, Miles was specific about the audience he wanted to reach, it was african american and not at all anglo, saxon or otherwise ... to my mind listening to his music this matters not in the least

i think it is a moot point that the Coltrane version of My Favourite Things is another piece of music to the show tune ...
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Ok, you don't understand it, and you're frightened. Don't let them tell you it makes you a bad person, though
