Julian Joseph presents a special 50th birthday concert for British jazz musician, composer, and pianist Nikki Iles recorded at Kings Place, London. The performance features The Printmakers, an ensemble headed by ECM recording artist and pioneering vocalist jazz Norma Winstone and Nikki Iles. The full line-up includes guitarist Mike Outram, saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, bassist Steve Watts and drummer James Maddren.

The Printmakers is not a recent work but well worth hearing, for those out of touch with Nikki's work. In her playing I am strongly reminded of another Bill Evans-influenced British pianist who passed away unbeknownst to me in August, for whom I shall now open a separate thread.

      Business as usual

I have just turned on for JRR to find JLU has just finished (and it still only one hour) due to an extended Live from the Met

Ho, hum - at least it's on i-player.

      OG

Edit: Much enjoying Nikki Iles, Norma Winstone et al. on JLU

Jon3 this week one of the best, if not the best, I have heard this year!. Marilyn Crispell + GIO + farmyard! If you hadn't told me, I would have guessed Stockhausen:

This new piece is by GIO founding member and saxophonist Raymond MacDonald. Exploring the borderland between improvisation and composition, the piece plays to the talents of the orchestra itself - jazz, folk, free improvisation, experimental, performance art - and those of one of the world's most respected improvising pianists, Marilyn Crispell. "Hearing her play solo piano?is like monitoring an active volcano", according to the New York Times.

The composition is designed to mine the fertile imaginations of the ensemble: fragments of jazz standards, loops, graphic notation and extended conduction will all have their place. Expect the unexpected
          !

not that it was perfect - I would have cut the voices at the end, and put in more Marilyn's piano.

RE. JRR and Bing + Louis - "now you have jazz" - I always have greatly enjoyed this piece in the context of the film. But isolated in a semi-academic setting of JRR, it seemed rather tawdry.
