There seems to be several issues in this thread.
Generally, I am on the side of Jazz, but Britten's music is a separate issue - apart from supplanting the jazz programmes this weekend - and Hear and Now, World Routes and EMS.
Britten was an extremely clever and skilled composer, and that is why I rate him above Elgar, RVW,etc.
But like Ian, I have difficulties with his personality, and his social background, which often pervades his choice of subject of composition, and choice of musical companions. Certainly a sore point with me is lack of compositions for female voice.
But whose fault is that? Mine or Britten's? Quite possibly if Britten / myself had been French , German (Henze!) or American, I would have overlooked these personality issues. Britten's problem, if there is one, is that he is too close to home.
