...be alert here! ...intuition runs high!

Alyn highlights swing trumpeters today but the track for me is from an album by Stan:
    Afro Charlie
Performer: Bobby Wellins, ts; John Mumford, tb; Stan Tracey, p; Jeff Clyne, b; Laurie Morgan drums. 12 March 1962.
    Composer: Tracey
Blues for the Hitchhiking Dead [they knew how to name an album in the 60s eh]

Claire is all about the European Jazz Orchestra jazz gets a better deal in the EU than the UK with its fantasies of independence immigration and insular paradise .... must be something to do with civilisation, culture, education ... you know that sort of thing ...

Geoffrey picks Rollins and Drummers , his fave raves ...

The event features short sets from established acts as well as one-off collaborations. This year's line-up includes UK electronic improviser Leafcutter John ? expect anything from samples distorted by a Wii to creaky floorboards, Dutch experimental acoustic bass guitarist Luke Ex ? along with Ab Baars and Ingrid Laubrock on reeds and saxes, and the Anton Hunter Trio. A guitarist from Manchester, Anton's spiky melodies and heavy riffs reveal his roots in experimental post-rock. And he's also well-known for his work with electronics-meets-brass ensemble Beats and Pieces. Here, he plays alongside James Adolpho on bass and Johnny Hunter on drums.
i am not saying anything, nowt, nada, zilch ... not one word about incoherence, fol de rols and trol de rols, no nothing about that sort of inconsequential meanderings maunders and twitches ... it is an ADVENTURE

Jez's programme from the Oto contained some interesting stuff, for sure. I was meanwhile enjoying this year's cut-price offerings in the Queen Elizabeth Hall/Purcell Room foyer - well, freebies as far as the audience was concerned, but as an audient I have been a tad concerned at what is turning out to be something of a low budget LJF this year compared with last's - half-hour duos from F-Ire Collective representatives in the foyer, items cut short before any real chance to cohere in Jez's programme. Audiences to the free events are smaller too, reflecting , I think - exceptions as usual being the big name acts. As Radio 3's showcase I'd have expected a focus on Trish Clowes.

As regards Jez's programme, bit of a pot pourri, with some excellent stuff.

I had to suppress a grin when I first heard the Swiss vocal effects guy - at least he didn't yodel. But I eventually came to terms with him, viewing him as a human emulation of electronics/ computer music.

Otherwise, no comments from me - other than I guess most people are too busy attending the Festival to bother about radio broadcasts.
