I was going to post this on the CDR Bargains thread, but thought there would be even fewer folk interested in the latest Anthony Braxton record over there.
The river people are offering Echo Echo Mirror House as a download for the price of 89p. This may well be an error due to the fact that there is only one (long) track on the album. The CD is going for £13.38.
So what does one get for 89p? Its always difficult to describe Braxton’s music in words, but this one reminds me of Ascension under the influence of Cage’s indeterminacy; and with bit of Gruppen, Sun Ra and electronics (iPods actually) thrown in.
Some, mebbe even Braxton himself, would say that it isn’t jass. It seems to me, however, that this is more in the tradition than many of the very pretty things that I keep buying from Uncle Manfred.
Some may indeed hear cacophony, but to me its full of great joy and beauty. It makes the listener an active participant though choices in what to listen to at any moment and what connections to make. I love it.
Best wishes,
Paul
