I quite admire Colin Towns' work as he seems to produce music that is crammed with ideas even if he sometimes seems to over-write. One of my friends is a huge fan of his music and he would be able to explain to you just how switched on Towns is to the music of the late 60's-early 70's. Past albums have covered the likes of Miles from this period, Frank Zappa and , perhaps less successfully, John Lennon. There are few composers / bands as over-rated as the Beatles (Although the likes of non-musicians / posers like Morrisey, U2 and three-chord wonders Oasis come close) and I am often of the opinion that the actual "music" was probably more to do with George Martin than Lennon / McCartney who conjured up a few good tunes by shear good fortune more than any musicial talent. That said, Towns has produced a fantastic score of "I am the walrus" where he is able to employ 20th century classical techniques and a great deal of ability. For me, he bridges jazz and serious music in a fashion that I feel is hugely under-appreciated and would mark him out in my estimation as one of the most creative voices in British jazz over the last 30 years.

Here is a clip of an Italian band playing the chart - not quite as sharp as the version on record but you get the impression where Towns is coming from. Also worth noting that he did start his career in Rock music. Under-estimate him at your peril.
