    ... this sceptic Isle

Alyn is in a swing time mood ....... taking the Mulligan?

Julian features a Bobby Wellins set from Glasgow and a feature on Gearbox an old fashioned record company

Geoffrey covers Coltrane but no details up yet ... [zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz................................]

Kevin Le Gendre presents British reeds player Tom Challenger and his Brass Mask octet performing music from their new album. With a line-up of 3 woodwind, 4 brass and percussion, they're tailor-made for the bluesy New Orleans street-band sound that filters through the music. But the avant-garde ensemble writing of Henry Threadgill is also an acknowledged influence on the group, reflected in the pinpoint ensemble writing, some abstracted grooves and plenty of surprising harmonic twists and turns.
plus Rebirth Brass Band and concludes with a track from the Trish Clowes Quartet

quite a brit feel to this weekend's jazz

Just one track from Trish's band, hmmm - this must be from the Vortex sesh I wrote up here the other day, and I hope they broadcast the rest of her set before too long as it was very good. Listen out for the sound of one hand...

Even my ducks are yawning and they go to bed at 6pm.

      BN.

If you had fallen asleep you would have missed the john Escreet track which was actually pretty good. Seeing at the line up features both Chris Potter and David Binney, a pairing which has produced some pretty dynamic music in the past, this album looks like a "must have." Escreet is potentially the most important jazz pianist we have exported to the States - even if you take on board some of the more celebrated names like George Shearing. I hugely rate his work and seeing that he is a pupil of Richard Muhal Abrams, I would suggest very unlikely to send you to sleep.

Curious to see James Morrison being featured as I understand he also prevents the equivalent of "Top Gear" in Australia. Whilst it is pretty amazing to see how many instruments he can play, when his name cropped up in discussion with some of my Australian jazz friends, they were a bit sceptical of him. It was as if he wasn't considered to be serious and certainly not "iconic" as suggested by julian Joseph.

As for the Rebirth brass band being boring and would suggest that if you don't enjoy the gritty and heady mixture of N.O. jazz and funk you are proably not a true jazz fan. Rebirth epitomise the notion of jazz being a music from the streets.

A great public service. I wish someone would prevent the UK version.

I enjoy the N.O marching bands as well, but they lose a little in a concert hall or studio

Alyn, my ducks liked the Hamilton/Lucky Thompson "Mood Indigo". They were happy quackers..

Ian, that track on JLL was Waynewash eyewash...now as formula as hardbop in Lidl bap.

Geoff Smith did Trane by the numbers...there is so much more. MFT etc again for feks sake.

BN, well yes, we did include a bit of MFT on Jazz Library, but a bit of other stuff as well: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazzlibrary/pip/tgjw7/
Does your C60 collection include my R3 Ascension series? Lots of interesting contributions from McCoy, Shepp, Rudy Van Gelder, Roy Haynes, Reggie Workman, El Skid, Lewis Porter, Ira Gitler, Jimmy Heath, Alice, Ravi, etc etc...

C90s Alyn, C90s, let's keep up with the new smart innovations pleeeze.

And yes it does. Prized items that sit alongside the Central Avenue series and the Jazz Library Lee Morgan as models of their kind. Shame there wasn't a Kenny Dorham one.
