These pictures are brilliant but the image of Blind Willie Johnson is exceptional. Not aware of this artist or his work. Thanks for posting the link - shame that the series about "the blues" had to include a picture of Fratton Park and even more so as it also incorporates the idiot with the bell. (Probably more famous for being drunk these days than being a genuine supporter.)

It's curious has Portsmouth's reputation as somewhere that had a strong affinity for jazz seems to have disregarded the music. I'm not sure if there is still jazz at the Beresford, Stamshaw but I can only ever recall going to two gigs in portsmouth. The first of these was a woefully under-supported Loose Tubes gig in the Guidhall shortly before they disbanded and then I saw Will Bernard and Stanton Moore in a pub just outside of Southsea. You don't hear of much being performed in Portsmouth these days as Southampton seems to attract the more serious jazz due to the connections with the university / Turner Sims. Even Winchester in pretty hopefull for jazz which is a real surprise with the college community but I think folk is probably bigger. Given it's maritime links, Portsmouth should have a better jazz scene - but , then again, they should also have a football team that the fans deserve and itsn't struggling at the foot of League Two.
