.... a new audacity of imagination.

Alyn amongst the many and varied tracks on JRR Alyn offers a classic Dankworth line up ...

Geoffrey covers the Kenton works band innit .... interesting soloists though

Kevin goes to Wavendon, featuring the Buck Clayton legacy band with Alyn on bass! Alyn also curated the arrangements for this ensemble ..

Jon3 does bombastic skronk and explosive eccentricity; nuff said just check it out ....

According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

I guess this is one for leftfield jazzrock buffs - if one dare include Mahavishnu Orch in the, er... category.

I saw TrioVD when they first came out, and was impressed with them, actually. Some fascinating electronic blends conjured into the free improv. They weren't as loud as I'd expected, at least, not all the time by any means, but maybe that was because it was a lunchtime gig in the Festival Hall bar.

I'm still suspicious of the idea of jazz rock. One of the gigs I saw a few weeks back featured Guillaume Perret's "Electric Epic" who opened for the ridiculous Redriguez and folk-blues of Ben Harper. The Perret group featured an electically-doctured tenor backed by guitar, bass and drum . The initial number suggested a Garbarek-esque approach but things quickly got grungy. After about ten minutes it was an effort to remain interested and I couldn't be arsed to see them play a second set at another venue once Harper had finished.

These kind of groups are in the vogue at the moment rather like piano trios were several years back. It is odd but although I would usually gravitate to music that is new and exciting, this stuff just sounds noisy and brash. I've not really checke dout Trio VD (terrible name) but as I get older this stuff seems too much of a departure from what I expect to hear in jazz. In the case of Perret, I wasn't too impressed but this is what they sound like if you like this kind of stuff. Seems to be too much rock and very little jazz feel about it. I suppose I would probably appreciate more if I was twenty years younger. These days, this kind of stuff is an irritant:-

Impressively loud! Hypnotically monotonous. Could this be music to put one to sleep? Where does this leave minimalism?
