    Kings of Cool

    Monday 8th July, Radio 2, 10.00 am - second of 4 programmes.

Moira Stuart [for it is she] celebrates five male jazz greats across four weeks. She continues with trumpeter, flugelhorn player and singer Chet Baker (1929-86), remembered as much for his non-traditional jazz as his good looks and colourful life. Contributors include writer James Gavin, author of Deep in a Dream: the Long Night of Chet Baker (2002), revealing some of the so-called demons of the West Coast man whose signature recordings include My Funny Valentine, performed as a member of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. First broadcast in December.
For those who missed it first time.

Serialist: A (measured) antidote to offset - somewhat - Chet's...gruesome...grisly...words fail when even confronted with just a photo from this artist's last decade.

Anyways, mystery author Bill Moody's jazz-playing sleuth - Evan Horne's - take on Chet is worth a look, I assure you.

(An aside): While in Las Vegas, I left a message (about arranging to get my copy signed) with the William Moody listed in LV telephone book.

After a few days, I did get to speak to this William Moody - who turned out to be an old hippie...a real throwback..

He did know of Paraphernalia, tho. (Barbara Thompson).
