    Don Cherry in The Wire

Some boredees might be interested in a fascinating 10-page 'Primer' on trumpeter Don Cherry in the current WIRE magazine(July 2013). Strangely, Brian Morton omits to mention Cherry's band NU who were recorded live by the BBC at the 1986 Bracknell Jazz Festival. Along with Cherry were the vastly underrated altoist Carlos Ward, Mark Helias(bass), Ed Blackwell(drums) & Nana Vasconcelos(percussion).
Exhilarating & passionate music well worth tracking down.

On the cover: The Dead C – The New Zealand underground rock trio have been making music at the outer limits for 25 years. On the road in Europe, they tell David Keenan why Bruce Russell’s amp sound is better than sex. Plus: Rashad Becker, a Primer on Don Cherry, Pangaea's Invisible Jukebox, Arturas Bumšteinas, Paul Metzger, The Durian Brothers and more.

Discover Nu by Don Cherry released in 2001. Find album reviews, track lists, credits, awards and more at AllMusic.

i saw NU in leicester and Aberdeen that year amazing both times .... and a sad contrast to a later gig in Camden Town where Cherry appeared to be ailing ...
