JLU Sunday 6 Feb 2011 - Martin Speake and Nikki Iles

A live set from a Martin Speake - Nikki Iles Quartet. Looks like some of the stuff from last year's excellent "Bloor Street" album (credited to "The Secret Quartet") but with Sam Lasserson on bass and James Maddren on drums rather than the Canadian musicians who played onthe album.

Plus tracks from Bobby Wellins (with Liam Noble), Colin Towns and the NDR Big Band and Brass Jaw among others.

Is it just me, or has JLU started being good since it moved to its current unlistenably late time?

If this (Speake/Iles) is the sesh at the Barbican I was at, people might find it a tad restrained, I have to say... Liam Noble with Bobby Wellins? Bring it on!

I heard Wellins with Noble a month or two back, they were excellent.

link to Herts Jazz, Clark Tracy's noble effort:

Herts Jazz Club at The Maltings, St Albans, formed in 1969, run by Clark Tracey, presenting the best in British contemporary jazz every Tuesday.

that Gadd track was a steamer, great if you were there but perhaps less than interesting on a cd... lick jazz but Gadd was very pushy

is the Brass Jaw quartet the one you pointed out to us on the old MB Byas'd?

as you say S_A the Speake Iles 4 were restrained ..... still an opportunity to hear ms Iles ....

one broadcast that lived up to the progs mission ... more like this please [sans the BBC Big Band especially]

            comparisons are odious but instructive

compare the Speake Iles cereberal hesitant delicacy with this quartet [already linked on Ian's mainstream thread but reposted here to make a point .. this group are alive and biting but play as much inside as the SPeake Iles combo but their presence and dynamics are far stronger]

The pianist and his core trio have been some of the busiest sidemen in the business. But Goldberg has also made time to lead for more than 10 years, and does so this time with Mark Turner on sax.

Calum. I like that Mark Turner. Aaron Goldberg's piano style compares well I think (btw) with that of Kit Downes, on the track from KD's new album, track featured on same programme.
