    Jazz "horns" on BBC FOUR

Did you see last night's programme?

A wide selection of Jazz styles, with a brief acknowledgement towards Dixieland and then jumping straight on to "Progressive" Jazz, but thankfully stopping just about short of the so-called "Modern Jazz"; which to me seems to be without purpose. (even the performers appear not to know what is coming next!)

Interesting for me to see Ben Webster playing with Ronnie Scott. The contrasting styles of Dizzie Gillespie and Wynton Marsalis.
All those tenor saxes and some fine drumming (largely unacknowledged on the credits).*

    * Well, in America, anything blown through is called a "horn" (shades of Bix Beiderbecke) but the only horn that I saw was a Flugal horn played in the last number - a mish-mash of an item which, for me, spoiled an otherwise interesting historical journey.

Yes, well... calling a saxophone a "horn" does irritate me. It's difficult enough trying to persuade people that the saxophone is not a brass instrument. But now I know I can blame our trans-Atlantic friends.

"horns" is really a slang term. Saxes are in the reed section, and dominate them to extent they are often called sax sections, in big bands, trumpets and trombones in the brass.

                  Hey man just chill
and dig the horns ....... all of them ........ the "Cor Anglais" isn't a "Horn" either
                  neither is the Kenneth
                  or
                  the leg
but David writes some interesting music .............as do the Stimm brothers

and Arkady Shilkloper is in a league of his own if you want more horn .......

Just watched it - interesting selection and an eclectic mix.

I did find the sight, at close quarters, of Dizzy Gillespie's chops expanding slightly unnerving though!

Dizzy Gillespie's chops do not expand slightly ...

...of course one watches all the Jazz programmes on BBC4 .... repeated though they are ... and one enjoys visiting history one more once &c ...

but these are cheap archive footage [no complaints about that, even more from the archive would be most welcome] ... when did we last see a last full blooded live concert on BBC tv? there is a a blind ignorance of the works of such as Tim Garland, Trish Clowes, Kit Downes [name yer own] etc on tv .... why?

when was a jazz festival last given live coverage?
