US vibes player Jason Adasiewicz brings his Sun Rooms trio to the 2013 Cheltenham Festival. As a former drummer, his music is quite literally hard-hitting - the force of his mallets getting the instrument to resonate, in his words, "to the point of distortion". His emphasis on timbre reaches beyond power, though, finding subtle shadings that lend his vibraphone a distinctive and wholly contemporary sound. Adasiewicz has a grounding in straightahead jazz but also in the avant-garde of his native Chicago. Sun Rooms explores the interplay between the two, with Mike Reed on drums and Devin Hoff on bass.

But for some inexplicable reason the Claude Thornhill clip made me think of Jon Hendricks - but I can't track down an audiio clip:

"Once back in the states, the Tatum connection kicked in. It was the late 1940s and the music was changing. "I had a quintet in Rochester, N.Y. It was white kids who were doing the bebop thing at the time, and they were good," he said. "I had this drummer who couldn't get it, so I demonstrated. He said to me, why don't you play? So I did, for eight years, just to show what a bebop riff was. I was singing the riffs. [He scats.] Words came later at a club in Toledo called the M & L. The first one was 'Anthropology.'" He did not copyright those lyrics. "I did it for creativity; I became a businessman later." All his lyrics are now published by Hendricks Music, which is administered by Music Sales, "the biggest in the world," he said proudly"

Thanks Calum. Jon had his own special genius, and always admired him greatly.

Not such a great fan of Gil, but I did enjoy the last two tracks played by Geoffrey, Murder by Numbers, and the Barbers Song, which revealed a more meaty side to Gil's work.
