I suppose that it is appropriate to post the following link on this thread as this includes a 15 minute film that I would urge any genuine fan of jazz to watch. Aamazingly, I think I might have seen this musician when he was MD of Lionel Hampton's band which played in Poole sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. (I've lost the programme aand altough the band was highly average, I've no idea who was in it.)
I had heard this musician's records played before but never really checked out his music. It was a great shame that he died so young and I feel a bit guilty that I never recognised his genius at the time. For my money, this alto sax and flute playing was absolutely incredible. This is the kind of jazz that will appeal to more "outside" jazz fans like SA as well as the more traditional tastes of someone like Bluesnik. (As Bluesnik has sometimes been an outspoken critic of contemporary musicians on this board, I strongly recommend this to Bluesnik given our shared enthusiasm for Jackie McLean. ) I would imagine the little film will be a revelation for someone like Bruce. It is disappointing that nothing he recorded remains on CD at amazon or atleast for a sensible price. I've been going on to Youtube to check his music out too. The flute playing is pretty fantastic but the alto solos are nothing short of staggering. One of the best , in my opinion. I strongly recommend that you watch the whole film - absolutely terrific!
