I suppose that it is appropriate to post the following link on this thread as this includes a 15 minute film that I would urge any genuine fan of jazz to watch. Aamazingly, I think I might have seen this musician when he was MD of Lionel Hampton's band which played in Poole sometime in the late 80's or early 90's. (I've lost the programme aand altough the band was highly average, I've no idea who was in it.)

I had heard this musician's records played before but never really checked out his music. It was a great shame that he died so young and I feel a bit guilty that I never recognised his genius at the time. For my money, this alto sax and flute playing was absolutely incredible. This is the kind of jazz that will appeal to more "outside" jazz fans like SA as well as the more traditional tastes of someone like Bluesnik. (As Bluesnik has sometimes been an outspoken critic of contemporary musicians on this board, I strongly recommend this to Bluesnik given our shared enthusiasm for Jackie McLean. ) I would imagine the little film will be a revelation for someone like Bruce. It is disappointing that nothing he recorded remains on CD at amazon or atleast for a sensible price. I've been going on to Youtube to check his music out too. The flute playing is pretty fantastic but the alto solos are nothing short of staggering. One of the best , in my opinion. I strongly recommend that you watch the whole film - absolutely terrific!

Ian, dont ever presume to know my tastes...far wider than anything Poole could dream up.

BTW, one of the best things I've seen recently is the New York tribute to Cal Massey, raw, rough as hell, playing his Black Liberation suite at the Red Rooster, with white and black musicians, young and old, male et female. That IS jazz. it gives me hope in a hopeless world. Its on Utube.

Henry Threadgill on flute here on what is a brilliant album. His flute tone is like his alto, strong and thick, almost rubbery:

And another name yet to be mentioned here, Julius Hemphill. This is my favourite from his superb album Dogon A.D.. Lots happening here, I'd request it on JRR but it would occupy 25% of Alyn's airtime:

No offence mean't. The comment was made as your observations on this board usually show scepticism for more contemporary styles of jazz. I you watch the segment of the documentary the point is made that Thomas Chapin was a musician who an "avant gardist" in more traditional settings and a traditionalist in avant garde situations. I also didn't appreciate that his trio with Mike Sarin and Mario Pavone had appeal outside of jazz which must be pretty unique for music this edgy. I would suspect that he is a musician who would appeal to you and , I would guess, also someone about whom you are probably not aware.

For what it's worth, I don't come from Poole or have ever lived there. Never quite understand why you made this comment in the past. Are you confusing me with Harry Redknapp? ( I don't have a twitch nor a dog that is capable to doing my accounts.)

..can any one recall a Miles Davis Recording with a flute in the front line .... the only thought that springs to mind is when Dave Liebman was in the band ...

meanwhile another favourite from the family radiogram ...

Calum, not perhaps flute in the front line, but Gil\Miles Porgy and Bess used it very effectively.

Then there's Miles and Sonny Fortune..."Get up with it"?
No, not my kinda 'ting but.

Prompted by Bruce's thread I've listened again to the Milt Jackson\Frank Wess "Opus de Funk" album on Savoy...Frank is really good, lovely tone, great lines, he worked at it.

I've also been listening to a lot of Bud Shank...hes v.good but it reminds me of film scores of Steve Mcqueen grooving down cool Calif highways! Where the white flute got lost in THAT cliche?

Is ex-Jazz Warriors' flautist Phillip Bent still active? He was tipped to be one of the next big things in the late 80s but I've not heard much about him lately.

Seems to have disappeared under the radar once more, Byas'd - this being as far as I know his last release:
