According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

And me! Interesting to compare (well may be not) Trish's approach, which is completely different from that of the lady introduced by Julian Joseph. Similar aims in a sense, but worlds apart.

Incidentally, anyone heard from S-A recently? His last post stated "Hope it's iplayerable, since I now have to go out." Reminiscent of Captain Scott?

Yes no doubt others on this board can give a better analysis, but for me the string quartet slows the pace down to regular Classical pace, gives the music a chance to breath, and the listener a chance to savour the delights of Trish's band's improvisations.

A main problem I've always had with free Jazz and Improv is its freneticism, not its complexity.

well S_A might well do so Oddball but he is , we sincerely trust temporarily, embarrassed by his internet connections, he is a fan of the young lady

my difficulty with free improv is the wall of noise school ....

i'm particularly missing serial apologist's thoughts on monday's jazz on 3 too .

a pretty fantastic show, (despite kev and jez's waffle)....jane cortez's writing, and trish clowe's scores for 'nonet' stole the show, though i thought alistair spence and sam newsome were pretty riveting too.

also, where's charles t? - (as 'the necks' bass player played on monday's jazz on 3,...and (iirc) charles t likes em a lot).

Alister Spence is doing a short UK tour at the moment. I was at last night's Glasgow gig and thought it was very good - definitely worth going to hear if he's playing in your neck of the woods. It's music from the borderland between contemporary jazz and free improvisation, but mainly from the jazz side of the border.

He was interviewed in The Herald earlier in the week: http://www.heraldscotland.com/arts-e...minds.20111709
