There is another view of Mingus available from Radio 3 - not reliant on the ghastly Mr Burns in any way: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00g85gj

when it comes to ghastly large rubber balls of independent will i am presently instructed to sit on one for periods at a time by the physiotherapist [an angel] who takes the back group at the day hospital ... let us therefore not too readily dismiss large balls .... they have their uses ... but if you have suffered that peculiar male dysfunction, a hydrocele, a prompt dismissal is essential [they do not stop growing ]

if you refer by piano on JLU to the Chick Corea set, i must agree ... noodlin .... and just insufficient in spirit compared to The Beloved Trio of D Bates

Calum, not sure what a hydroc...is, well, I get faint at anything over a hacking cough brought about by feeding marxist ducks in ALL weathers.

But, a BIG thanks for your work here. Even on a rubber ring.

            BN.

It dont mean a ting...if it aint got that...ring.

Many thanks for this Jrook! I love the BBC speak of "collaborative decision"! Meanwhile, I sense a lot of tension between the current two R3 jazz stools.

Now playing..."Better get it in your stools"...Dr. Mingus.

Having listened to JRR for quite a few decades, I feel Alyn Shipton's presentation just suits the JRR prog fine.

GS now brings his personality too, to JAZZ, just wish they could move away from the graveyard shift to something earlier but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

It's been a few months now since the introduction of the 'new' JRR, so I feel I can now comment on the content. A track by Steely Dan was played last week, this would have never been considered in the past, (I don't care if Victor Feldman and Wayne Shorter are on it, they were just there for the money). Also there seems to be much more meandering tuneless world music featured which doesn't fit the description of jazz. I don't think it's Alyn Shipton's fault. He certainly knows his subject, and his previous Jazz Library programmes were excellent. It's down to BBC manipulation. Where have all these non jazz requests suddenly come from? I'm sure nobody dared to send in such requests when the others were in charge.

Glad to see my request generated some reaction.

He's gonna love the next one.

I'm thinking of requesting "Stools Rush In", by Brook Benton. Well, Harold Land was his m.d. for a while...and it will bring sorta neo-jazzsish to a much wider radio demographic.
