Blessed is he who expects nothing but "low stools"

Alyn has no playlist up at present

Geoffrey has no playlist up at present but is covering Charle Mingus

Julian presents a concert by the Chick Corea Trio
Jazz Line-Up recorded Chick Corea at the 2012 London Jazz Festival with bassist Christian McBride and Brian Blade, renowned for his peerless work with everyone from Bob Dylan to Wayne Shorter. One of the most prominent jazz musicians of the last fifty years, Corea is a masterful acoustic pianist, whether at the heart of a stellar trio such as tonight's, or in collaboration with the likes of Bobby McFerrin or Bela Fleck, as well as an acknowledged pioneer of fusion stretching back to the landmark Miles Davis albums 'In A Silent Way' and 'Bitches Brew'. 18 Grammy awards reflect his status as one of the most prominent jazz musicians of the last half-century.
Recorded on the 17th November, 2012 at the Barbican, London

    Jon3 showcases Wadada Leo Smith

With over 40 years on the clock as a premier avant-gardist, American trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith is still breaking the mould. He performs here in an unusual line-up featuring leading British improvisers.

Smith is joined by two drummers Charles Hayward and Steve Noble as well as Orphy Robinson on electric vibes. Wadada treats his trumpet to live effects and processing, giving the gig a dark yet energising edge, reminiscent of Miles Davis's electric period.

but beware there are two numbers in this set from Cafe Oto preceded by a long track list of vocalists and the golden age of vocal blah blahs ....

pretty shabby show Radio 3 jazz people .... playlists not up on a Saturday... [or wrong last week] programmes have a suspicion of being phoned in ....

Thanks Alyn - one hopes this was possible to be a pastry cut and not a type from scratch job. I have the Richard Rodney Bennett LP from which cometh the final track ("Little Jazz Bird"), having got it for me dad. Discerning listeners can maybe decide from, this if RRB was a jazz pianist - not that I think he ever claimed to be, mind.

Is there now a kind of "playlist grid" for JRR? It seems to have become much broader in stream over the weeks? Like my waist. A touch of lemon in the salad soon?

It's called listeners. And the things they request. You want to change it, you send more requests. Can't guarantee to play them all (but there's a Wilen track for another listener coming up soon) but what you hear is a pretty accurate cross section of what's asked for. I have resisted calls for Peter Nero and Kenny Ball in recent weeks...

I've had three requests played by Geoffrey, I shall now test the water with Alyn!

So JRR is roughly representative of the jazz tastes of the R3 audience/free market? A kind of "hidden hand" product allocation? With no "state" intervention? I would have thought that Peter Nero and Kenny Ball would have been right there amongst the top selling white goods.

                      BN.

I have never been a big fan of JRR, as I prefer to have the presenter make the choices. So the break point for me was when Jazz Library was cut a year or two back. I now make do with that sweet Japanese lady and her very predictable selections.

But it did occur to me that Alyn may have been taken over and brainwashed by Roger Wright, so that although we are hearing Alyn's voice, in fact we are getting RW's selections.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

JRR, What a successful simple formula over the decades, doesn't require any changes thank you, Alyn's seamless taking over the programme is just right.

Nice to hear Robert Wyatt choice: Ken McIntyre / Eric Dolphy's: Lautir (Ritual)

I dont get worked up about it anymore as people will make requests for a multitude of reasons, often little to do with any jazz or artistic merit, but a fond memory of student "ales" in Club Banjo in the late 50s. At times lately it seems like the people who go to Neville Dickie gigs twice a year, and weep at Hurricane flypasts. They are on a roll. Or, in the loop.

I've just submitted another request for an artist I do not recall hearing on JRR - ever. (Even though this musician isn't exactly obscure.) It definitely warrants a place on the show, even though I also had a perfectly Proustian reason for requesting it.
