highlights from Adventures In Sound, an afternoon of improvisation curated by Jazz on 3 at the London Jazz Festival. The event features short sets from established acts and also mixes them up into one-off collaborations. This year's line-up includes a legend of the free-improvisation scene - no-holds-barred German saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, appearing with several members of his Tentet. Also on stage are Golden Age of Steam, one of the UK's most innovative bands of recent years, exploring spacey textures and intricately constructed grooves. There will be a strong French presence too: pianist Eve Risser brings a variety of home-made devices and piano preparations to the party, while the vibes-led MeTal-O-PHoNe combine gamelan-inspired textures with hard-edged electronics

JLU the intreresting one here for me: two new drummers who I feel could make for changes in these respective units. Tim Giles I'd always thought a bit too "rock" but he did marvels sitting in for The Maddren up 'ere last week, and should put the pep back into Mr Ballamy's recent drift; Lorie Lowe's a new name to me.

my old man was chairman of the South Kensington Labour Party back in 1960 or thereabouts El Senor [don't mention lost causes eh] and he wrote a little piece for the party newsletter about the ducks on the lawn at the back of the LCC flats we lived in [yep do not mention lost causes, what else could you write about in the South Kensington Labour Party?] .... for the next few years his few words each issue were headed The Chairman's Ducks

I have so missed dear old Geoffrey since he got shunted off into the graveyard slot - I see the scheduling is only because the opera comes from Covent Garden tonight, not The Met. Shame R3 is tied in to them and don't broadcast from more European venues, it would make more time for jazz on a Saturday.

How wonderful to hear 'Geoffrey Smith's Jazz' immediately after JRR instead of the graveyard slot. The audience for the programme must have tripled. In a sane broadcasting world we'd have this every week!
