Friday night is party night, and no party is bigger in the Jazz on 3 calendar than our live show from Ronnie Scott's club in Soho. We're celebrating 10 years of kicking the London Jazz Festival off in style, with four brilliant and totally contrasting bands, including a new name on the UK scene, some eccentric Swiss musicians with a typewriter, and a couple of stars from the States.
First up is the young British trio GoGo Penguin, who'll light the blue touchpaper with their high-energy anthems – think EST but with a Mancunian twist! Then, a real marquee name: Terence Blanchard is a prolific film composer, but it's in his guise as one of the most renowned trumpeters of the past 30 years that he appears at Ronnie's, bringing a quintet that combines top-draw sidemen and some exciting youngsters. I'm really looking forward to some hard-swinging, soulful music.
Next on stage are maverick sextet Hildegard Learns To Fly (Hildegard Lernt Fliegen to give them their official name). Led by a vocalist who draws on beatbox, vaudeville and Zappa, and featuring typewriter and tuba, this will take us to all sorts of corners of the musical universe – should be a great trip!
To close, we've a real exclusive – trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire (a Jazz on 3 favourite of the past year or so) in a rare duet performance with drummer and regular bandmate Justin Brown. If you've heard Ambrose with his quintet, you'll know to expect an astonishing range of sounds and emotional directness from his horn. Beyond that, we'll all have to wait and see!
Join me live from Ronnies on Friday 9 November at 11pm, or listen online for seven days after broadcast.
