    RIP John Tchicai

John died earlier today after being in a coma since June when he suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Alyn, sad to hear. I see he was 76. Only yesterday I was playing "Four For Trane", one of the truly great albums of that era. I know he did much more but thats where I first heard him.

I'm just so glad I had the one chance to meet him, as well as attending his last-but-one appearance. I believe, at Cafe Oto. Really friendly bloke, full of anecdotes, and a great entertainer as well as musician.

Really sorry to read this. A few years ago I emailed him via his website about his tenor sax (unlike most tenor players he didn't like Selmers; he played an old Martin instead).

And here's the reply I got:

I have a Martin and a Conn, don't know if you have seen me playing the goldplated Martin. I usually only use it
when the other one is being repaired. I'm not a fan of Selmer, the tone is not open and clear enough. the technique
              is good though, quick!
I've been playing a Link *5 metal but now i'm trying out a Berg Larsen 120 metal with the Canadian plastic reed.
              best regards,
              JT
