ez Nelson presents two sessions as part of the Radio 3 Piano Season: John Law and his trio, and a left-hand-only recording by Robert Mitchell.

Law has been at the cutting edge of UK jazz for over two decades. Having spent several years exploring free improvisation, working extensively with South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo, in recent years he has aligned himself more closely with straightahead jazz and his own classical roots. Since 2006, his Art of Sound Trio, recorded here for Jazz on 3 last year, has combined individual virtuosic brilliance with collective groove and lyricism. It features Yuri Goloubev, former professional orchestral bassist and a member of Gwilym Simcock's trio; and drummer Asaf Sirkis, also known for his work with Tim Garland and Gilad Atzmon.

Robert Mitchell was one of the first members of the F-IRE Collective and with his bands, Panacea and Robert Mitchell 3io, he explores the combination of rhythmic complexity with nu-soul and hip-hop sounds. His playing style reflects a grounding in 20th-century classical music, marked by a refined touch and, at times, high-velocity repetition. His growing interest in music for the left hand, across both classical and improvised disciplines, led to this exclusive session for the programme.

Also this week, a special musical tribute to saxophonist and improviser Lol Coxhill, featuring improvisations recorded in places associated with him, by friends and fellow performers such as Evan Parker, Sue Ferrar and Phil Minton.

Two hands are better than one, to coin a phrase - but this week we’ll go further to give you three hands on the ivories, continuing our music for the BBC Piano Season. On the one, Robert Mitchell performing with just his left hand, and on the others, John Law in session with his trio. Plus, music recorded at home, in the car and in busking hotspots – read on!
Law brings together a quarter of a century of classical, free improv and mainstream jazz experience. The opener of his session for Jazz on 3, first broadcast last year, puts Baroque finesse (bassist Yuri Goloubev is in his element) alongside grooves that get surprisingly heavy. The second, previously unbroadcast piece, Insistence, has a gentler but no less refined feel, with Asaf Sirkis taking a turn on the darbukka drum, while Law makes full use of those two hands to create intricate but hip music.
Before we hear how Mitchell does the same, there's a very special tribute to saxophonist and improviser Lol Coxhill, who died earlier this year, featuring short improvisations by musical friends from Evan Parker and Sue Ferrar to Phil Minton, Veryan Weston and more. Some of them were recorded in places they associate with Lol (see above) - it's wonderfully evocative and brings home just how rich and varied his contribution to music was.
To close, some beautiful and rare late-night music. Robert Mitchell's really into the left-hand only tradition – such as it is. He's added to it here with some charming and engrossing pieces. Be prepared to listen to the piano almost as a different instrument – it takes a few minutes to adjust!
from the newsletter ... bet he typed it with two hands eh ...

Must give this a listen via the iPlayer. I'm not much of a jazzer but since John is a sort of in-law (he's married to a cousin of mine) and I liked what I heard of his playing a couple of decades ago I really should catch up.

Has something happened to the frames et layout on this site? It has suddenly, well a.m., switched to a cramped box on my Smartski phone USSR, 1921.

Painful... as the revisionista Hazel Blears would say.

The question is, said Alice, is whether you can make words mean so many things?

The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, is who is to be master, that is all!

                        Mind your language, comrades.
