i can't help thinking that louis will also be appalled, haunted by the recent platinum mining massacre, feared as a giant step backwards especially by those in exile, and those politically conscious in the rest of the world. a signal that the financial elites investing in 'bricsa' (brazil, russia, india, china, sth africa) may stop at nothing to grab as much as they can for 21st c profit. that the same old same old prevails - despite decades of sacrifice in the name of political resistance, thankfully faithfully expressed and documented via some sections of jazz music.
nevertheless, viva louis and friends! if anything they are more important in setting a positive example to younger generations than ever though unfortunately, i don't suppose there's a spot in beeb jazz output, where a decent discussion might be held unfortunately..... just the spinning of endless jazz faves, often minus any broader context.
yet imv what comes across in the interview linked is that simply playing jazz at ronnie scott's may entail a tube ride to get there ..or a whole lot more! what also comes across from the music itself is that despite the horrors and hardships that the music produced can feel so incredibly joyous, and free.
