Welcome to the start of a month of programmes that give you a second chance to hear some of the very best contemporary jazz performances from the last year or so. Each edition will be stuffed to the gills with live music and tonight it's played by two of the brightest stars to have emerged on the international scene in 2011.

I've seen Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset a couple of times since this gig with his Golden Xplosion Quartet last year, and each time he's stamped his muscular tone upon the music. In this performance, his jaw-dropping technique and energy are right there from the off, creating a web of different lines that most players would need a loop pedal for. And once the band are in, the heat just rises. Those of you who heard it first time round may remember the funky, break-beaty duet between Neset and drummer Anton Eger at the climax of the gig – a real champagne moment.

You won't have heard the first chunk of the gig by US trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire unless you were at the gig in Amsterdam. This previously unbroadcast material is a chance to hear the full range of Akinmusire's startlingly expressive playing – especially in the heart-rending duet at the start. His playing frequently takes surprising turns, and the music as a whole rarely settles for long. There's an epic feel to it though, particularly later in the set as drummer Justin Brown builds a fiery solo in The Fire Next Time.
newsletter ... yep it is August and some welcome repeats ...

Strongly impressed, if not actually blown away, by Marius Neset, and the showcasing of his F-Ire Collective support, especially the talented Mr Ramm. Ambrose Akinmusire's had a lot of plaudits from bordees; hmmm.... I think I'll have to give that session another go. My immediate impression was that the improvisation element in this group was all over the place however good they are claimed to be. Playing free doesn't amount to just playing any old thing, it has to relate in various ways to what is going on, even if that is determined moment-to-moment, but these guys were playing in relation to harmonic structures... or rather, not playing to the harmonic structures. Was this anyone else's impression? Maybe I was just tired...
