Scandinavian/British trio Phronesis in concert at Kings Place in London. Led by Danish double-bassist Jasper Hoiby, and featuring Ivo Neame (piano) and Anton Eger (drums), Phronesis has in the last few years built a reputation as one of the most formidable groups on the UK jazz scene, blending complex but high-energy grooves with compelling melodies. This performance features new music from their fourth album, Walking Dark, which sees Neame and Eger writing for the trio for the first time.

Looks interesting. A pretty heavy-looking line-up from the imposing Mr Hutchings. Ivo Neame was especially on form in New Cross on Tuesday with his new Large Ensemble (including Shabaka H on a CD due out in October); and, speaking of "imposing", how about this from Ivo, livo?

Ivo Neame's not just an excellent pianist, but also a pretty nifty alto player.

          Phronesis

Anglo-European trio Phronesis are on the crest of a wave at the moment, fresh from taking their music to the US and releasing their latest album to critical acclaim. And we're riding that wave with them on this week's programme, with a performance that brought the house down at the end of their recent UK tour.

Before we hear that performance, bandleader and bassist Jasper Høiby joins me in the studio as we bring back the MP3 shuffle – a random but illuminating window into his musical influences that takes in some big names as well as some music that was completely new to all of us in the Jazz on 3 team.

Then it's into the gig. Until recently, Høiby wrote all the music for the band. Not any more, but whoever each piece is by, the material is always marked by that distinctive Phronesis sound – exciting, tight, odd-meter grooves and a sense of fun. Høiby's agile, angular basslines show amazing technique but lose none of that joy in the process, while Ivo Neame really impressed me with the shape and confidence of his improvising in pieces such as Zeiding – he's a rising UK piano star that perhaps hasn't yet had as much acclaim as he deserves. And then of course there's drummer Anton Eger, whose cutlery solo from last year's Marius Neset gig is still imprinted on my brain. He's all over the taxing rhythmic patterns that the band demand of themselves, and really lets rip in his own tune, The Economist. The gig ends with an old Phronesis favourite – an encore that rewards the whooping and hollering crowd, thoroughly enjoying surfing the Phronesis wave.

Join me on Monday 25 June from 11pm, or listen online for seven days after broadcast.

Finally, a reminder that you can now apply for tickets to our BBC Introducing concert at the Manchester Jazz Festival on 16 July, via www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/tickets/. The ballot (you aren't guaranteed a ticket) is open until Monday 2 July. Good luck!

Mmm, Troyka - Jazzwise seem to rate them (http://www.jazzwisemagazine.com/feat...yka-into-orbit). I shall look out for this.

              Interesting music.

However I wish musicians would keep their opinions of other musicians to themselves. Robert Glasper does not play Jazz? Then we have a Viennese waltz played as one of Holby's influences! Isn't it a fruitless discussion to state what is and what is not jazz? This did prejudice me against Jasper, but his music did eventually win me over.

Anglo-European Jazz? Have we left the Common Market already?

i don't oddball. (providing it's not just bitchin for bitchins sake, as do celebs elsewhere in show biz).

zoot and al were sounding mellow late night (last) saturday on dj geoffrey's show.

i found the jlu interview with shebaka hutchings disappointing, but some of the tracks played made up for this, particularly the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woKXA...eature=related. the rest of jlu music/chat did nothing for me whatsoever...the piano interpretation from a musical was dreadful, but listeners had to stay tuned in case shebaka came on, despite tedium of musical torture in between times. even the kirk tune selected was a comparatively dull selection http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uRnvMwD6jM

i haven't listened to dj jez as yet, (hope to catch up this wkend).

Very disappointing programme altogether, I agree.
