    Bill Frisell's Beautiful Dreamers Trio

Monday night’s show features one of our all-time favourite jazz guitarists – Bill Frisell - recorded at one of our favourite jazz festivals – Cheltenham. A couple of weeks ago we gave you a taster, and this week we’re serving a full portion of his Beautiful Dreamers Trio in concert – with Eyvind Kang on viola, Rudy Royston on drums.

Any Frisell band is going to put the exploration of texture fairly high up its to-do list, and this is no different. The impressionistic opening to Lennon & McCartney's In My Life is a prime example – delicate drum washes and faintly Eastern-sounding viola lines, over which Frisell judiciously dabs colour, before the tune subtly reveals itself. There's clearly a lot of scope for freedom and spontaneous interplay, which makes all the precision of timing and sound-production all the more remarkable. But don't think it's all going to be a gentle ride – Frisell's bluesy, almost grungy and even psychedelic side comes out at times, and get ready for a blow-out climax to the performance!

Frisell's love of strings has been increasingly apparent in recent years and, before we hear his gig, journalist Brian Morton tells us why he thinks it's a golden era for strings in jazz more widely, with contributions from viola player Mat Maneri and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm among others. And to end the programme, the last of our international jazz selections – which, appropriately for this week, comes from an American guitarist – proof that, even in the USA, there are hidden jazz gems to be found.

Join us on Monday 28 May from 11pm to hear all this, or listen online for seven days after broadcast.

Interesting Geoff has chosen two of the same tracks Roy himself chose for our Jazz Library. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazzlibrary/pip/1mdrj/ Might have been a chance to play something different...?

Surprised to see Melody Gardot featured on a jass programme.

I'd always assumed her to be a Brigitte Bardot-styled ventriloquist's dummy.

Hadn't heard of her before, but was disappointed to find out that although she is inspired by Latin , Latin American music, she is not a genuine Latina but a New Yorker born of Polish immigrants.

A very talented person, who no doubt has a large fan club. However referring to her as a dummy is perhaps not the best term, as she was involved, according to Wikipedia, in an extremely serious car accident which left her brain damaged, and which she still has to come to terms with - the reason apparently she turned to Latin music.

But in my humble opinion, any singer worth their salt will have to go wider than the Jazz medium - there is not enough within Jazz for a singer with a traditional attitude to singing.
But at the end of it all, this singer did not do much for me - so I probably agree more with S_A than disagree.

Hmmm. Not knowing about Ms Gardot's accident, my posting was in bad taste. If anyone complains I'll try and get it removed.

Improv for me involving stringed instruments is not something I can pick up easily. I think it is stretching a point to call it Jazz. Certainly not something I can listen to in the background while doing something else.

However I will have to put this on the "to do" list - but not very high up the pile.

..and just reminded on the GS show on iPlayer that Snap Crackle Pop made a wonderful contribution to the Getz Focus album
