No Jazz Today but ... 12 & 13/2/12 there is!

    JLU features

Shabaka Hutchings performs original material from his own library with his new group, plus special guest David Okumu, bringing his heritage and cultures to Kings Place, London, in this exclusive concert and recording for Jazz Line-Up on BBC Radio 3.
    Seb Rochford - drums
    Tom Skinner - drums
    Oren Marshall - tuba
    Shabaka Hutchings - sax/clarinet
    David Okumu - guitar
    Jon3

music from Warsaw's distinctive jazz scene. In the last few years the Polish capital has become one of the most exciting centres of European jazz, with a host of young musicians exploring everything from Chopin to electronic music. The programme includes a live performance by Osaka Vacuum - a sax/cello/drums free-jazz trio led by British ex-pat Ray Dickaty - and a specially recorded session by twin brothers Marcin and Bartlomiej Oles.

        I agree!

I wonder if anyone remembers a broadcast he did a few years ago on Radio 3 from a disused power station in SE London, the tuba tubed up to several amplifiers, each miked to different effects pedals. I always forget to ask him how he managed to find sufficient "puff" to animate the multi-channels involved so as to produce the amazing quasi-orchestral sounds.

          Looking forward to JLU

Re: your last comment (above) I was directed by a link on another forum on this site to the R3 Facebook page. I see the latest post is gushing encouragement to enjoy the delights of Herr Wagner's offering. Being both old and grumpy I don't "do" Twit/face - any of you jazbos care to post a comment?

No Jazz Saturday night - but if Wagner is not to your taste, and you want to stay in on this cold night and listen to the radio - may I suggest slumming it with Jazz FM? A lot of commercial dross - but the occasional gem .

thanks calum da jazbo for the tip as regards 'jlu', and warnings as regards changes to the r3 schedule. how very clumsy, to shuffle r3 jazz scheduling around, like spare meals on wheels!

despite the 'double drumming ishoos' it was a great 'jazz line up' show last night.

personally, i hope 'sons of kemit' tour the same kind of material this year, as the set must be even better live. between the current 'sons of kemit' line up, there's a good few other potential live music projects presumably ... ? it'd be good to hear what tom skinner does when he's not playing with seb rochford, for instance. i imagine a mr tuba-fronted ensemble would be great too. does anyone know what has happened to rochford ensemble 'polar bear' btw...is it still going?

iirc i heard some very unique clarinet playing at one point during the set.... but a 'listen again' is in order, as semi slumber isn't the best way to listen to such vibrant music. (i may have dreamt the unusual clarinet playing - but sincerely hope not)!

incidentally, did anyone manage the whole interview with shebaka hutchins, following the live set?

imv (justifiable) huffs about wagner don't help listeners confidence, a sense of routine personal listening plans lost...it's not like he's just died, or there's some sort of wagner-related emergency on, is it?! it also makes the farsical big excuse about r3 'attracting younger audiences' look even lamer than usual. .... if it had been whitney housten replacing r3 jazz, at least logic might've played a part in the changes to schedule.

all especially annoying in the same week that beeb director general, mr mark thompson, has apparently actually bothered to notice and comment that there are hardly any mature women presenting beeb tv ..... BUT what ever took him so long? where was thompson when the tv nature prog presenter took the beeb to tribunal over her 'high definition wrinkles' for instance?

There's been a DEARTH of women jazzers on R3 for some while, singers apart, one notices! It's about time Jon3 presented The Vortex Foundation Band, now going a good decade or two.

Not sure about Polar Bear - checking...

Jazz FM - what's that? We're still old fashioned (and reliable) analogue FM round here. No DAB signal due to local geography. I realise that I could use the interweb, but, being old fashioned, I still like to get my programmes from the wireless!

Yes a very good JLU . I enjoyed the "primitive" sounds from the horns and reeds - to go backwards is to go forwards. But the onion analogy seemed a bit superfluous.

I agree OG about Jazz FM. Not available at all in FM version, so I can't tune in on the car radio. Perhaps there will be some spare FM tranmitters available when BBC finally axes FM transmissions.

i want to join the growing chorus of praise for the JLU Sons of Kemet Ensemble .... really enjoyed the soloing and ensemble sounds, thoughtful and intelligent music making that was funky too ....pretty ace i thought
