    International Jazz

    Just thought I'd set up a thread to talk about international jazz.

    Mostly because I found this on youtube;

    Sounds a bit Derek Baileyish (at the start at least), he studied with Masayuki Takayanagi too.

    A nice little double bass solo, these clips are from the Hot House Jazz club, a tiny venue in Tokyo

      Thanks for those, Geoff. The first track sounds like a Monk tune. Strange to hear legato strumming in that context: rather like a Mondriaan picture on an easel in a Vermeer interior.

      Marcio Mattos told a story about going to Japan to play in some improv fest. Unable to find accommodation large enough to take his double bass, they put it and him up in the local Zen monastery. It turned out a monk there had a large collection of British and European improv recordings.

      Funny, I didn't realise they allowed them possessions...

        Take Five for the Shakuhachi, it's quite amazing that he is capable of doing this on such an instrument!
