Very much looking forward to this, thanks Calum, having missed it first time round. I've always found the duo with Chick rather twee, but that with Paul Bley should I imagine be at least interesting. Anyway, I shall give it all a go without mallets aforethought. (Not my pun btw).

The duo with Paul Bley is, from my memory, amazingly good although I haven't heard this CD for ages. Bley is almost a kitemark for inventive and quality jazz - difficult to imagine him ever releasing anything that is pedestrian.

It's interesting to consider Burton's repuation as a musician as I have found alot of his recent work to be extremely safe and very, very mainstream. I've seen him live on a couple of occasions (including dueting with Corea) and the best lineup was the recent quartet with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow and Antonio Sanchez which pitched his playing in a very contempoary context. Sanchez is always terrific and in a more traditional jazz setting, I think Metheny definately raises the bar for his fellow musicians. Unfortunately, the mixing desk managed to mangle the sound at Poole and this took the edge off the set. Fascinating to contrast Metheny's mammoth harmonic vocabulary in comparison with Burton's more tradition musical approach - I felt that they were almost talking a different musical language.

Other than this, Burton is to be complimented for encouraging young players whether it be the rather dull Tommy Smith or Julian Largue who atleast manages to be more compelling. However, I feel that alot of Burton's early work and recordings from the 80's onwards are really that compelling. There are other vibes players like Bobby Hutcherson and Steve Nelson who operate in similar territory but are far more compelling than Burton. I think that even younger players like Stefon Harris are far more interesting and indeed relevant than Gary Burton.
