A New Voice on the Scene

Rebecca Ferguson caught my ears and affection during the last X factor series .... she has a voice that is comparable to the greats in sound if not technique, but she is given a rave reception by the Telegraph today for her new work

it seems she pushed away all the nonsense and just did her own thing ... she has imv a voice to die for and i hope she manages to succeed enough to be around for a good long while ...

She has a great voice. But she hasn't "pushed away all the nonsense"; she's still signed to Syco (Simon Cowell's company), and she co-wrote the songs on her album with Eg White, who writes for all the big bland singers like James Blunt, Will Young, and James Morrison. (White began his career in the Stock, Aitken and Waterman stable). While she certainly has a more interesting voice than any of those, she doesn't seem to have any ambitions outside of that milieux. Good luck to her, she seems like a lovely person. But not my sort of music, thanks.

well she will be contractually obliged to Syco following XFactor for a year or so ... she has the voice to be appreciated over a career not just an album ... that is the point if she can survive the Syco years she has the class to be one of the great artists ...

So we're discussing the X-Factor on the Radio3 forum.....and people accuse the station itself of dumbing down!!! I wonder what the reaction here would be if this "artist" was mentioned on Breakfast.......

I think Pee makes a fair point.

I have great difficulty with the Pop Factor shows because they don't seem to be much more than glorified karaoke. The singers give impersonations of tracks (rather than songs) "in the style of". It's not so far removed from a parlour game like I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue's "One song to the tune of another". In this girl's performance, I feel I hear a little bit of Amy, a little bit of Macy, a little bit etc.

Good singers can still turn up on Pop Factor, I've no doubt, but surely this girl sings flat, quacks and squawks?

well life would be pretty tedious if we all liked the same thing.

i might be going to see the dave stapleton quintet tomoz. i am apparently to 'expect the energy of cannonball adderley'! and the quintet better look like they're enjoying it, as j fordham has written 'as always with stapleton's band everybody plays as if they couldn't think of anything that they'd rather be doing'. pressure!

out for a curry tonight, but today is more this flavour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_yXoUc_5dA ...a new discovery (personally) prompted by a bit on joe harriot, on r4 'front row' last week.
