Expect an even greater tsunami from the anti-jazz brigade than last time, however...
Looking back at one thread which ran to over 400 posts, I'd say the tsunami was what hit the protesters
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
hope there's no pauses in the bebop, or silences during the discussion - they'll suspect it's minimalism, and want their license fee back!
hope those offended complain to 'feedback', it'll be a hoot!
This old joke could be given a "minimalist slant":
What is the difference between a jazz guitarist and a rock guitarist?
A jazz guitarist plays 2000 chords in front of 2 people;
A rock guitarist plays 2 chords in front of 2000 people.

assume, stating the obvious, that a minimalist plays at the most one chord in front of 0 people - but didn't John Coltrane do the same thing?
Great COTW, as I stated in the original thread on the BBC boards.
But time to move on - can't stay enthralled to Bird for ever. Bebop was a break-out from the swing era. What are we breaking out from now?
A rock drummer goes into a music shop and says that he wants to learn to play jazz and he would like to buy that red trumpet hanging on the wall. The sales assistant says I'm sorry but the fire extinguisher is not for sale.
Well...while I'm delighted that jazz got a daytime airing, the last programme brought home to me how much this was under sufferance. All of post bop jazz summed up by Geoffrey Smith's idiosyncratic choices? "Classical" composers get a whole week to themselves. There's certainly enough scope and variety in Coltrane's oeuvre to warrant a week to himself. (Even a week on his 17 recordings of My Favo(u)rite Things ranging from modal to free!) But one track hidden amongst a rundown of "where bop lead"? That's pretty insulting.
Has Ellington ever had a week to himself on Composer of the Week?
