An unashamed plug
One of the best gigs I've been at this year was Dennis Rollins' Velocity Trio's set at this year's Glasgow Jazz Festival. They're about to release their first album, and are touring to promote it.
The tour starts on Friday 11th in Sheffield and goes on until early next month. I don't know if they'll get mentioned in JLU's London Jazz Festival preview, but I'd strongly recommended them to anyone with any sort of taste for funky organ trios. But there's absolutely nothing retro about them: as well as doing interesting things with electronics, they play one of the great unlikely but successful jazz covers of a rock song. (It's a very well-known one, but I'm not going to tell you which. Jazz is, after all, the sound of surprise; and I wouldn't want to spoil the surprise).

And here's Dennis talking about the band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGHEwOH8jOI
