    From Russia with ... Jon3 7.xi.11

avant-garde Russian saxophonist Alexey Kruglov and his trio in concert. Kruglov is part of the Moscow improvising scene, continuing the tradition developed by the Ganelin Trio in the 1970s and 80s. His music combines punk-rock energy with dark humour and a folk-like lyricism, allied to an eccentric playing technique that includes playing several instruments at once. He is joined by Estonian electric guitarist Jaak Sooäär and Paul May on drums, performing music from his latest album.

Also on the programme, a session by Scandinavian free jazz trio The Thing, featuring saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums.

Kruglov's music combines folk-ish melodies, punk energy and an uninhibited exploration of his various instruments, sometimes even playing more than one saxophone at once, as in the short and ferocious opening number of tonight's performance. From the interval conversation with our guest this week, Kevin Le Gendre, and on the evidence of this set, Kruglov is into dark humour, as we hear in a frantic march piece (propelled by Paul May on drums) that ends the first set.

Completing the trio is Estonian guitarist Jaak Sooäär, who contributed several pieces to the set. His sensitive solo playing and exciting wah-wah effects really stand out, as well as a strong conversational voice in the final tune, Huga.

To end the show, we've got an exclusive session from The Thing, a Scandinavian free-improvising trio comprising saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums. They can be volatile and hell-for-leather, but they end the programme with a hushed, late-night groove.

jez opened with keith jarret live in rio track. quite overly sentimental iirc.

i was pleased to be transported to moscow jazz in stokey.

'portrait of a small plant' was suffocating, made no progress. 'fish birthday' revealed that there was apparently an owl in 'the vortex' audience!

and 'the battle' seemed to have the most energy and direction this far ...

the multi reed playing, 'romantic expressive' with musical roots apparently in fellow russians, (composer rimsky, and 'the ganelin trio' respectively) sounded intriguing.... . and probably being there counted for alot? there's a great idea in there somewhere and Completing the trio is Estonian guitarist Jaak Sooäär, definitely had some good sound fx and styles to contribute.

but perhaps 'the ganelin trio' themselves make a better sound, are better at 'it'?

also featured 'the thing' on 'jazz on 3'. 'the seed of time' was very mellow, suited r3's younger but seriously snoozy target audience.
