i think i'm thinking of 'racey' as in 'folk blues' or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SfkF...related....... or jazz influenced blues, as opposed to relative conservatism of your r&b mainstream list).

'race records' apparently 'didn't sit right'...... well no! not then (apparently), or now... really. name-wise, 'black' was ok; and 'soul' as confusing as 'r&b' mainstream... 'catch all' syndrome, as you put it.

... a good 3 days utubing to do! but it shows the progression really well, and also the labels.

btw is there a jazz one too, like the r&b list?

Jazz (crossover) records would have been in the lower reaches of the R&B/race charts I guess. There were race charts then R&B then Soul then back to R&B again but they are all the same in reality.
