"WHAT'S THE USE OF GETTING SOBER, IF YOU'RE GOING TO GET DRUNK AGAIN?"

I would have thought someone like Georgie Fame would have been more appropriate to comment on Mr Jordon? As the Blueflamer cut "Fish Fry" and "Good Times Roll" etc. etc. and has a real feel for the genre?

ANYWAY ..on tooooooooooooooooooooooooo late for me...

ah well, having listened, i am left where i started, buy the greatest hits and play it once every five years, was going to say show biz, but actually lightweight really, for my taste .... too many novelty type numbers, clever but repetition kills em ... and if it's r&b you want well ....

and if it's r&b you want well ....

FATS DOMINO - "SO LONG" (1956) avec a gorgeous floating alto solo by WALTER DUCONGE (heroin) , ripped off from an early Charlie Parker solo with Jay Mcshann.. Fats had a VERY fine band at that point.

Havana, Cuba, Oct 24.- The report “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba” will be submitted to vote on Tuesday, October 25, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Expectations are for this time, like in the previous 19 years, the majority of the UN member countries to vote in favor of the Cuban call for the lifting of the blockade maintained by Washington against the island for nearly 50 years.

As Cuban authorities have repeatedly reported, this siege has brought about economic damages to the island worth more than $975 billions.

The resolution notes that the blockade continues to be an absurd, illegal and morally unjustifiable policy which has not succeeded and never will succeed in undermining the Cuban people’s patriotic decision to defend its sovereignty, independence and right to self-determination.

Amazing what Socialism In One Country can achieve, ahem...

(BTW FD's "So Long" was my intro to R&B on the school Dansette Major. I think it must have been a single, as the quipt couldn't really handle LPs unless they were already mangled. The other side would have been his version of "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans", with its great riff that can be sung without losing its sense. So thanks for the clip, Bluesie).

hey! great to see your feminine side calum da jazbo!

'jazz library' was well worth a listen ....just for 'stone cold dead in de market' by ella f and louie j. best music all programme for me, especially the calypso brass...loved it.

although i didn't mind that track on 'mercury' records ...but wasn't that keen on louie and otterly in 1962 ...since they seemed totally mismatched.

some of the decca tracks sounded like j cullen-itis on r2....that's because they were big hits, that others still sing, presumably.

i think all in all, i much prefered the out and out, non pc, domestic violence fest, that is 'stone cold dead in de market'!

was jordan from trinidad ....odd that we don't know for sure?

Probably a bit of familiarity breeding contempt re Jordan. They were pop songs of the time not Art but were OK. Joe Jackson did an album of this eras music in the 80s and a Louis Jordan cover was a Radio hit. Georgie Fame sing some of his songs.

R&B seems a catch all (Marketing) term. Swing without complex solos, Boogie (not piano boogie which seems to be it's own genre for some reason) New Orleans Bounce, Jump Blues, proto Rock'n'Roll, everything but folk blues, out and out jazz and crooners.

Stuff which sold more in Black areas than outside I guess (with the emphasis on Urban?).

                            Race Music?

From wiki (says 'citation needed' but sounds right to me)
In June 1949, at the suggestion of Billboard journalist Jerry Wexler, the magazine renamed its chart again to "Rhythm & Blues Records". Wexler wrote : "Race" was a common term then, a self-referral used by blacks...On the other hand, "Race Records" didn't sit well...I came up with a handle I thought suited the music well - 'rhythm and blues'... a label more appropriate to more enlightened times."[5] The chart has since undergone further name changes, becoming the "Soul" chart in August 1969, then "Black" in June 1982.[6] It has been the "R&B" chart since October 1990.

joe jackson and georgie fame aside.....have i heard these lj tunes in old tv/movies? perhaps not. as 'jazz library' guest and obvious lj enthusiast gwyneth, would have mentioned this point perhaps?

lj sounded more like show biz music (to me) ..... than how i imagine 'race music' might typically sound.....ie more risky, earthy.
