Incredible to learn that John Zorn is 60!! The Youtube clip nicely sums up his music for me. Parts of it are absolutely terrific, other elements make me think that he is taking the piss and the remainder is an absolute noise. I saw "Masada" play about ten years ago when the band included Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen and Joey Baron . Back in the 1980's this group would have been cutting edge but they have been caught up by the likes of MOTDTK.
Zorn is a difficult musician for me. He always seems to do things on his own terms and I admire him for than. However, he deems to be abrasive and court controversy which ultimately becomes a bit tedious. Obviously he is a brilliantly talented musician and someone with an amazing amount of knowledge and resepct for a wide range of musics.
The Youtube clip is worth listening too but I think I'd prefer the Mike Gibbs concert that Fordham also mentions!
(Can't bear to watch the Paloma Faith video - hate the Cockney act she puts on.)
